The Diary Of FDR

For the next three years I practiced law at a prominent law firm in New York City. After my three years as a lawyer I decided to enter politics as a Democrat. In 1910 I was elected to the New York State Senate. It was different for me to enter politics as a Democrat considering I was from a Republican home district. .
In the midst of my schooling I had met the most wonderful person. A person who I still today love, cherish, and respect. This person is my beautiful wife, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt. She is a distant cousin of mine; she is the niece of my fifth cousin Theodore Roosevelt. We were married in 1905 and in an eleven-year span we had six children, whom one of our children didn't survive infancy. .
In 1912 I was reelected to the State Senate. Also during this time I supported Woodrow Wilson's candidacy at the Democratic convention. As a reward for my kindness and generosity, Woodrow appointed me Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1913. I held this position until 1920. I believe that my experience as an efficient administrator and my experience with the business side of the Navel administration will truly help me with the war. Because of my efficiency with the Navy, the people of America liked me, raising my popularity. I had become so popular that the Democratic Party nominated me for vice-presidency in 1920. I ran with a man by the name of James M. Cox of Ohio. However, sentiment against Woodrow's plan for the U.S. participation in the League of Nations propelled the people to vote and elect Republican Warren Harding for president. After this I decided to take a break and return to private life. .
While I was on vacation on Campobello Island in New Brunswick during the summer of 1921, I contracted Poliomyelitis. I tried just about everything to fight this crippling disease. However, despite all my efforts I became paralyzed from the waist down, never being able to use my legs again. However, during this time I established a foundation in Warm Springs, Georgia to help other polio victims.
