The Decrease In Crime In The U.S. Over The Past Eight Years

"One study conducted in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1996, focused on police-community interactions in jurisdictions that have implemented some form of community policing" (Baley). The research shows numerous, positive effects from the community policing. "One striking research finding was that as cooperation between police and citizens solving neighborhood problems increased, the residents felt more secure in the neighborhoods" (Brown). Naturally, the members of that community are going to have a feeling of safety and tranquility, because they know when they call the police they are going to be on their side. Which also builds a sense of confidence and trust for both parties. Members of the community no longer feel reluctant in calling the police when they witness or are a victim of a criminal act. By doing this they are working together to get the drug dealers and criminals off the streets. Community policing also works, because the residents are getting the support of the police officers, instead of being dominated by the actions of the police officers. The voice of the people is being heard, and who knows more about what's going on in the community than the residents of the community. .
Not only has Indianapolis but also a lot of the big cities have implemented community policing as a crime-fighting tool. So, there are several communities getting involved in community policing, because it is effective! .
In my opinion, I think community policing is effective, because if the people were not helping the police officers it would make it a lot harder for them to find the drug dealers and criminals. If the community can see who is doing the drug dealing or who are committing the crimes, and give the police that information it makes their job much easier and both parties come out winning. It's a win/win situation, because the police want to catch the criminals and society wants them off the streets, therefore, decreasing crime.
