The Conflict Between Academics And Athletics

"In 1999-2000 KU's cumulative G.P.A. of student-athletes was higher than that of the entire student body" (Academics & Athletics at KU). Without athletics schools wouldn't be the same. Athletics belong in the academic life. Student-athletes have to know what each professor for each course is expecting from the student. If a professor has a zero tolerance rule the athlete is going to have to work around the class to fit it into his/her schedule. This means some missed practices, or at the worst a missed game. But many professors are supportive toward student-athletes. They might give an exam early, or allow a student extra time for a paper. "The same folks would do the same for a student who experiences a death in the family, or extended illness. Whether or not this person is an athlete." (Anderson) "Although there have been a few (professors) who have expressed tremendous concern about the time missed," Buskirk said of Kansas. "Our faculty mostly has been very accommodating . (But) the class doesn't become any easier because you"re an athlete." (Funk) Some professors require athletes to come in and check to see what the assignments are and have them done ahead of time also. .
There are many schools that have set higher standards for athletes than non-athlete students. At Shippensburg University they shape their athletic program to fit within the overall academic goals of the University maintaining a balance between athletics and academics. (Academics and Athletics) Nothing matters more in these universities than academics. Without academics there would have never been a university or reason for athletics in school. "This is first and always an academic institution, not a gym. The physical education program is an enhancement to the academic one, not the other way around," said Huber, on the issue of athletes being able to travel and the staff not. .
When it comes to academics and athletics, there are many myths that people believe about student-athletes.
