The Death Penalty

The NCADP notes that the purpose of our prisons is to rehabilitate criminals. There are programs that are run simply to help prisoners, such as out-placement programs where all of the money that they make is awarded to the families of murder victims. Some who are opposed to the death penalty believe that spending countless hours in a room with yourself and your thoughts can change people and the way they think. For most inmates, prison heals the horrid mentality that brings a man to prison. Although anyone who has been sentenced to death has done something repulsive, people who are opposed to the death penalty believe that this doesn't mean that the state should be able to take their lives. .
A common piece of knowledge is that we will follow in the footsteps of our predecessors. One main argument against capital punishment is that our kids see how we kill fellow beings as a punishment. Many would say that this is a terrible thing for our kids to be watching on television, because it promotes violence and exposes criminals to our children. But on the other side of the coin, supporters would argue that everyone, including our own kids, need to know what justice is and how serious it is to kill a fellow human being. .
Of course, there are many people opposed to the death penalty, but many also support it. In fact, in America there are more people that support the death penalty than oppose it. In May of 2001, 65% of people surveyed for the Gallup Poll were in favor of the death penalty in cases where the criminal was convicted of murder. In contrast, 27% of the people were opposed to capital punishment and 8% of the people surveyed were without an opinion (Gallup).
Some supporters of the death penalty speak out that you should do unto others as you want to be done to yourself. This is a common moral truth, which many say should be upheld even after one commits murder. Many people believe that if the idea of capital punishment is not in a criminal's mentality, they won't commit crimes; at least not crimes that will put their lives in danger.
