THE DIFFICULTIES FACING THE GREEK CYPRIOT APPLICATION FOR FULL MEMBERSHIP OF THE EU.
For many years by today, the Cyprus problem had been extended, and the situation was known by the whole world. Today, there are two communities in the island which have its" own state. But, only the Greek administration is recognized as the legal ruler of the whole island. No other countries, except Turkey, are not recognizing the TRNC as the legal administration of the Turkish Cypriots.
In 1960, a bi-communal republic was established under the guarantee of Turkey, Greece and UK. But, in 1963, this republic collapsed, because Greek Cypriots began and onslaught against the Turkish Cypriots. In 1973, the republic was divided into two, and in 1983 TRNC was founded. The Greek Cypriots continued to claim that they are the only legal administration in the Cyprus. .
But, the "Republic of Cyprus" as Greeks claim, has an administrative power only on the southern part of the island. It has no administrative power on the northern part, because, Turkish Cypriots have their own governments there and they rule themselves. European Union knows this fact, but it accepted the application of the South Cyprus Greek Administration.
Firstly we should know the history of Cyprus in order to understand today's situation.
Cyprus is very important strategically, because of its" location in the Mediterranean. And, due to this importance, Cyprus had been ruled by many countries. In 1920s, Richard the Lion Heart gave the island to Guy de Lusignan, the of Jerusalem. Until 1489, the island was ruled by Lusignans, and in 1489, the last kings" wife, who was originally Venetian, gave the island to the Venice Republic. The Latin period was so bad for the Orthodox majority in the island that they asked Ottoman Sultan to save them. And so, in 1971, the island came under Ottoman rule. The Ottoman period lasted for more than 300 years, and in 1878, the island was given to Britain; with the demand that Britain will help to Ottoman Empire against Russia when it was necessary.
