One example of this is displayed by Einhard, one of Charlemagne's prominent figures, who wrote a biography on Charlemagne years after his death. In an excerpt from the biography Einhard stated, "He was firm and steady in his human relationships, developing friendship easily, keeping it up with care and doing everything he possibly could for anyone (1, p 163)." This shows Charlemagne's compassionate character for people and his will to be successful in all aspects of his life. His devotion to reform and his positive outlook made him unequivocally matched in many respects (1, pp162-164, 2, pp 226-232). .
Charlemagne's reign proved to be very attributable to European society and culture. Though sadly after his death it was not long before his empire began to fall apart. The empire was later split amongst three of Charlemagne's grandsons, which inevitably lead to conflict. Along with drastic attacks by the Vikings and other invaders, the European civilization fell once again into social disorder. For centuries to come the continuation of feudalism and advancement of The Medieval Ages were very devastating for society. However, Charlemagne's contributions had undeniable positive affects on the development of European civilization (2, pp 232-247).
It is true that the reforms made by Charlemagne are sometimes referred to as The Carolingian Renaissance, although it was not nearly as prominent as what is known as The Renaissance. The importance of the Renaissance era is undeniably a major turning point in European history and the development of European civilization. After many centuries of devastation and battling one of histories largest plagues, society was diminished to small governments and little culture. The lack of culture lead people to examine ancient Greek and Roman history and develop new ideas. Europeans were ready for the reform and advancement, which would soon evolve (2, pp 318-322).
