The Chaser

The Chaser, which is a short story by John Collier, shows prerequisite of love ironically. In the story, the main character Alan loves a girl named Diana. To realize his wish, which is to be with Diana, Alan visits an old man to buy a love potion. The old man shows him a "life-cleaner" as well as a love potion. The reason behind this is that the old man knows the inevitable result of the love potion. This result will be Alan's return to the old to purchase the "life cleaner".
Alan is so set on making Diana fall in love with him, that he does not consider the consequences of any of this. While Alan does ask a few questions of the old man, including that type of love the potion entails, as well as the price of the potion, he does not pick up on certain things mentioned. For example, "Their effects are permanent, and extend far beyond the mere casual impulse." This is the beginning of the snowballing characteristics that the old man describes to Alan. Obviously, the love Diana will have for Alan will be strong and very powerful.
However, this is not necessarily a positive thing. The old man goes on to describe more and more characteristics that Diana will take on after sipping the potion. "She will want nothing but solitude and you." "She will want to be your everything." "She will want to know all you do." "If you are an hour late, she will think you are killed, or that some siren has caught you." While the idea of all of this sounds more than perfect to Alan, it is easy to recognize that the relationship will still have many flaws. Without a doubt, Alan will become increasingly agitated by Diana's desire to know everything about him, her raging jealousy and her constant worrying. Over time, Alan will grow tired of Diana and her flaws. Perhaps he will even cheat on her. However, because of the potion, Diana will, of course, forgive him. There will be no escaping Diana or her love. .
Inevitably the only solution will be to kill Diana.
