It has become the primary software solution of choice outside of a firm's Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, which contains the primary systems that run the enterprise. Supply Chain systems consist of client-server and e-commerce applications in both B2B (business-to-business) and B2C (business-to-consumer) versions where the customer and supplier can interface with each other in a zone of collaboration (Chopra and Meindl: 244). Many e-commerce applications are running by a software solution developer called an Application Service Provider (ASP). This model enables the client to use a web browser to access the software via the Internet and use those portions of the product for which the firm held a license. This method is usually more cost effective because the client pays for time and services used rather than directly purchasing or licensing software. In addition to the computer aspect of SCM, it is equally important to understand the following key terms that have to do with the management and transport of goods and services in the global marketplace.
The Supply Chain encompasses every effort involved in producing and delivering a final product or service, from the supplier's supplier to the customer's customer.
