this is at Amesbury Greater Stonehenge Cursus and Dorset Cursus. Dorset Cursus also has a long barrow at the terminal where this occurs. This appears to be a new form of order which is affecting society. .
Association with other monuments. .
Dorchester on Thames previous burial monuments and later ones, mostly associated with the terminals. Little material culture or debri is found at these sites. But, there are a lot of burial remains in the ditches and the pits. Some are burnt fragments others are larger. Most of these sites have not been excavated properly. There are enclosures associated with them we refer to as mortuary enclosures but we do not know that this was their function. .
East Anglia large numbers of cursus associated with series of ring ditches. Arial photographs are giving us this evidence the sites are not excavated. Stonehenge lots of long barrows associated one is on the terminal. Dorset Cursus 3 long barrow s surrounding and some aligned or actually cut through by the cursus. Many are earlier and it appears they are trying to link them.
Why would the positioning and linking be occurring? It could represent the loss of the smaller groups independence and the symbolising of linking and joining together of different groups residing in the landscape. The long barrow represented the ancestors this is a deliberate linking of the all of the ancestors in a particular area and removing the independence of groups.
Gusset would not be visible from any distance at some points there would be visibility of the whole monument. The terminals could see some of the monument, however they would be able to see a lot of the surrounding long barrows in the landscape around. It appears the long barrows are in prominent places on the monument, and it the existence of previously existing ancestral sites in the area. The line of the ritual of rites of passage could be associated with this, the monument would be the development of liminal zones and visibility of long barrows which would be linked in the ceremony and ritual of the times and thus creating a new group of federations.
