The same holds true with The Exorcist. When the action is focusing on the girl possessed by the devil, it is very tense; however when the priest and other characters are away from the girls the tension is not nearly as high. Psycho is one of the psychological thrillers that has a continually rising tension. No one is quite sure what or who is the killer of the movie until the end. The mysterious killer keeps the tension high throughout the movie. To judge a movie as bad or good base solely on tension is not possible because so many movie have different types of tension. Also, the choice based on tension would be entirely personal.
Special effects play an important role in horror films. Horror films normally contain the best possible special effects. Many of the films, including Frankenstein and The Exorcist, involve intricate make-up for the monster. Frankenstein lacked the technology for many special effects because it was filmed in the 1930's; however, the Frankenstein monster had some of the best make-up artists of the time working on his look. Psycho had a different type of special effects. The main one of the use of camera angles. They filmed the famous shower killing scene with over 70 cameras all at different angles. The camera angles were all showed within about forty-five seconds of actual movie time. This caused a sense of urgency in the film and was a tremendous accomplishment for special effects. The Exorcist, being the most recent of the three movies, has the best special effects. The make-up was used to make the child possessed look demon-like. They placed air bladders under a fake layer of skin to make it appear as if something inside the child was boiling with something trying to escape. Also, they used camera angles to make it appear as if the child spun her head completely around without moving her torso. In the new version of The Exorcist they used to newest technology on computers to make some even more frightening scenes.
