Sweatshops

.
I feel that the government should play more of a role in the overseeing of what is going on inside these sweatshops. When people are being forced to work extremely long hours and in the worst of conditions than it comes time for someone to step in and make sure the workers in these factories are being treated fairly. If the people who are running these factories are found to be violating the working conditions for these people then stiff penalties should be given. .
In nineteen eleven New York's Triangle Shirtwaist factory went up in flames. The doors in the factory were locked so people were unable to escape. Many people jumped out windows to their deaths from the factories high floors and others just burned to death. One hundred and forty-six workers died (Szumanski). If there were policies back then about working conditions, none of this would've happened and many lives would've been saved. .
In nineteen ninety-five, local and federal law enforcement agents conducted a raid on a sweatshop in El Monte, California, just east of Los Angeles (Szumanski). "The immigrants worked for sixty-nine cents an hour, locked in an apartment complex surrounded by razor wire. Workers were threatened with rape and murder if they stopped working" (Szumanski). Just imagine how many other sweatshops there are today just like this one here. Something needs to be done to find these sweatshops and stop the cruel and inhumane treatment of the workers. Because of budget cuts during the Reagan and Bush administrations the United States Department of Labor was not able to do adequate checking of garment factories (Szumanski). The reason that it is so easy to avoid inspections is because there are only eight hundred wage and hour inspectors working for the Department of Labor and they are responsible for inspecting six million factories in the United States (Szumanski). We need to have more people working so that no place gets overlooked because the inspectors are understaffed.
