Jordan started as a freshman for the team, and unbelievable accomplishment for any Tar Heel player. He was only the 6th player to start as a freshman under Dean Smith in the schools history. "Even though he had to do what every freshman did, which would be cleaning up after the seniors and cleaning up the towels they used, he still led the team in almost every way possible," stated Smith after Jordan's freshman year. In Michael's sophomore year, he took the Tar heels to the National Championship against the Georgetown Hoyas. He then took the game wining shot with 6 seconds left to clinch the win and the national title for North Carolina. He stayed 1 more year and UNC before entering the N.B.A. draft. (Dolan 47).
Michael was selected third in the National Basketball Association draft bye the Chicago Bulls behind Patrick Ewing, and Sam Perkins. His first year in the N.B.A. was a very exciting one. Even though he failed to make the playoffs with his team, he averaged over 30 points a game, and 3 assist. He was awarded the honor of being Rookie of the Year in the league. He was also selected and an All Star. Over the next few years, Jordan became known as a high flying, and participated in dunk contest coming away with a victory on numerous occasions. (Dolan 67).
Even though he was such a great player, he was criticized by people stating, "Michael will never win a championship if he doesn't became a team player. The league-leading scorer can not win a national championship." Every year the Bulls seemed to get put out of the playoffs by their rivals, the Detroit Pistons. It wasn't until the nineteen ninety-one playoffs that they beat the pistons and went on to win their first championship, and Jordan was selected as the playoff most valuable player. He then went on to win the championship 2 more consecutive years.
Jordan was then selected as 1 of 12 of the greatest players in the N.B.A to play for the United States basketball team.
