Society And Music

Thomas Jipping, Director of the Free Congress Foundation's Center for Law & Democracy, made an argument that expresses this one view on this matter by stating, "Popular music is the single most influential factor for many young people, and intuition, experience and research show this is an issue of potential harm, not just an issue of taste" (Popular Music's Deadly Influence 3)

These alleged violent connections have aroused some huge controversy and blame for a few musicians. People are accusing music makers of creating song lyrics that have caused people to react in certain unwanted ways and have also caused them to do some wrong things. The biggest and most widely known of these instances concern Marilyn Manson and Ozzy Osborne. Marilyn Manson along with another group by the name of KDFDM have been accused and blamed for having written songs that caused the tragedy at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. The two suspects in the shooting were both big fans of these groups, and because of that and the lyrical content of their songs, both these music groups have been blamed. After the incident Manson was quoted without even acknowledging the accusations, in saying, "I have been asked to comment. It's a tragic and disgusting anytime young people's lives are taken in an act of senseless violence. My condolences go out to the students and their families" (The Music/Violence Connection 2). However, Manson's fans have made comments arguing that his lyrics don't depict any sort of violent action. One of these fans stated Manson's message within his lyrics is, "not a negative message, and I"d rather her listen to him than rap where they degrade women by calling them b**ch or "pop a cap in you"re a**" so the band's not bad and if there's any influence it positive not negative" (Sympathy For The Parents 3).
Ozzy Osbourne is one of the other musicians surrounded by controversy concerning his music.
