All Quiet on The Western Front - Letter to Kantorek

What you told us about war was very untruthful. There is no glamor to war, and thanks to the war our entire generation is going to be wiped out. The life at the front was terrible, and the food was no better. The doctors gave no care to each individual, and each person was treated as dispensable. All of this was said by an older man who does not have to worry about getting drafted into the war. We trusted you with our lives, and you sent us out to die.
It is doubtful that any of us will survive this war. If any of us do survive we will not know what to do with our lives. We never finished school, and no jobs will be made availible. Kemmerich has already died; he is the first in a terrible chain of death. This war will forever scar me. I have to prepare for death everyday i wake up. It has almost taken me over, the lines of life are running short. I have seen countless souls lost to the dictation of a few who wont even fight themselves. Yesterday i had to deliver the news to Franz Kemmerich's mother that he was dead. I just couldn't tell her the death that he like so many others had died; the long slow painful path to darkness. I told her it was a quick and painless death. This is all thanks to you.
The food is horrid. The portions arent even a full meal. I would risk my life for a good meal. After all, we do worse every second we wait in the trenches. Although, one day we did get a nice meal, but that is only because half our troop died. Even when half the troop died it took some convincing to get the server to give us double rations. Sometimes i think of the meals we used to have and I wonder how I could have ever come to this life. Then the memories come back of the false propoganda you gave us. It would not even be a question if I was asked if I would risk my life for a nice meal. It is done by every man at the front every day. That is what my life has been reduced to, food.
