The prisoner began to jeer the guards, which met with a consequence, until it cam to a point that the guards would sadistically abuse the prisoners without reason, just for the fun of it Inevitably prisoners began to develop learned helplessness towards the guards. By the fourth day three prisoners were released because they seemed to be intensely traumatized, some were hysterically crying while the others were merely confused and severely depressed. This result showed that the students were unable to detach the prisoner self from themselves, which ended up changing their psyche. The ones that continued on with the experiment resorted into isolating themselves in order to cease the constant torment being brought upon by the guards. The prisoners began to feel that there was no way out.
Inversely the guards assumed the roles of the authoritarian to restrain the prisoners and maintain the prison order. Some of the guards reacted radically. One guard that was dubbed sheriff even went as far as adopting a southern accent and wore reflective sunglasses that his eyes could not be seen, reminiscent of sheriff in the movies. The radical guards behaved very hostile and cruel towards the prisoners. One the other hand, others guards were kinder, and occasionally did favors for the prisoners, like sneak in a cigarette or two into their cell. With all the chaos and uncertainty, the prisoner, by the second morning of the experiment, broke out in a rebellion. They barricaded themselves in their cells, using their cots as barriers, and disobeyed direct orders to cease the rebellion. The guards in an attempt to regain control of the prison sprayed fire extinguishers on the prisoners and stripped them of their clothing. The guards also forced many of the rioters, mainly the riot leaders, into solitary confinement. Following the guards" backlash of discipline, the prisoners became more submissive. They began to act more primitive and became solitary.
