Upon hearing the news, Michael Moore decided to film Roger & Me. Michael filmed the effects this layoff had on the town. The crime rate rose. Residents were moving out at an alarming rate. The rat population surpassed the human population by fifty thousand. Flint, Michigan was in trouble.
Michael Moore was set in trying to get in touch with Roger Smith. Michael wanted to ask him some questions and talk him in to coming to Flint to see the after effects the General Motors layoff had. This task took him many places in search of Roger Smith. Michael looked for Roger Smith at his office, his athletic club, and many other places he visits. His journey took him from Flint to Detroit, Chicago, Washington D.C., and New York City. .
Michael Moore tried to catch up with Roger Smith in New York City and almost .
succeeded. Then someone in the meeting recognized a crewmember. This crewmember was affiliate with Ralph Nader, a rival of Roger Smith. They immediately went to eject them from the meeting. The crewmember sat in his chair refusing to leave. That is when they picked him up while he was still in the chair and carried him out.
The mayor of Flint decided to try something new. He was willing to try anything to rid the city of the unemployment plague. The mayor hired television evangelist Robert Schuller for twenty thousand dollars to speak to the city. Anyone who was out of work was admitted free to see him talk. The city still needed more than this to fix this unfortunate situation.
There were more unsuccessful solutions. Taco Bell was supposed to be a good one. This was the dream job that everyone was waiting for. Well this is what the residents were told. Others were selling their plasma on a daily basis to make money. The crime rate rose to extreme highs. Flint, Michigan now had the highest crime rate in America. The only good thing to come from the high crime rate was a few jobs.
