Away

Rick tells Coral how he escaped conscription while his friends "won two years in the army". The historical aspects of the Vietnam War require the audience to make sense of them. The audience needs to be able to understand the concept of conscription and look at Roy and Corals situation from an empathetic point of view. .
The 1960's were also a time when Australia had a large number of migrants with a large proportion of these coming from Britain. Australia's stance towards migrants is revealed through the actions and dialogue of the characters. These attitudes are mainly revealed through the character of Gwen, who is socially prejudice towards migrants and her reactions to Vic, Harry and Tom who are migrants from Britain. Gwen makes comments like "No one asked them to come to this country. They have no right to behave differently." and tells Meg "I will not see you hanging around with that kind of life". It is only towards the end of the play when she learns of Tom's cancer that her reactions differ. She begins to see Tom has a weak human being who is dieing rather than a second rate immigrant. Other references in the play to migrants include when Roy doesn't think it important to know how to pronounce the name of the lady who made the costumes. "Mrs Papa Mrs Papalapa .Papalax oh well, I"m sure she knows who I mean, ha, ha, ha" and when the campers say "some of the new Australian campers might need to be reminded of the way proper Australian families run a holiday". The audience needs to understand why Gwen's views towards immigrants are so negative. Gwen feels superior to them because she is of a different nationality. She feels like it is her country and immigrants have no right to be there. The audience needs to look at immigrants through Gwen's point of view in order to understand her thinking. Without doing this the audience would find it hard to understand Gwen's views.
Another historical reference in the play is the Great Depression.
