Requiem For A Dream

"It's a reason to get up in the morning. It's a reason to loose weight, to fit in the red dress. It's a reason to smile. It makes tomorrow alright." Sara's world is clearly revolved around taking the diet pills and becoming "happy.".
As time passes we see how Sara's addiction has ended up completely consuming her, and her life is reduced to a vicious cycle of torment and desperation. She starts taking more and more of the pills just to feel the same as she did when she started taking them. While Sara becomes more addicted to the pills, they affect her mind tremendously as well. Her life becomes a fantasy and all she thinks about is the "red dress" and being on television. She has no concept of how sick and close to death she has come to. Sara is eventually hospitalized where we see how greatly her life has been affected. While she's being fed through tubes and given electroshock treatment, she still thinks that she is going to be on television. What once was thought to make her happy has actually ended up taking over her life and causing her to almost die. .
One would think that Sara's son would learn the dangers of drug abuse and addiction from seeing what she is going through, but Harry's life has been taken over by drugs as well. From the beginning of the film we learn that Harry's life is focused around heroin. He spends his days stealing and scheming for drug money, even taking his mother's television and making her buy it back from the pawnshop. While struggling to get money for drugs, Harry and his friend decide to start dealing drugs. They see this plan as something that will make their lives perfect and problem free. Enthusiastically, Harry tells his girlfriend about his plan, "We got this idea, if we get a piece of this stuff we can cut it up and double our money no problem. We"ll be on easy street." Harry starts out doing well dealing drugs and makes a large amount of money, but soon his plan to make him happy ends up ruining his life.
