Symbolism was central for Christian art. The symbolic representation was often more important than the literal meaning itself. The earliest showing of Christian art was found in the catacombs (burial chambers benith the earth, outside the city of Rome). Christian artist were not influenced by secular art forms, this is why they would not build sculptures. .
             Early Christian Art and Architecture:.
             Christian art would also be shown through the architecture of the fifth and sixth century. Typical architecture would be when entering the building through a roofless atrium surrounded by walkways on three sides. Ceilings were very high the building was open and the reason for this was so you would feel overwhelmed by God and to hold as many people as possible. Some churches could hold thousands of people at a time.
             Byzantine Art and Architecture:.
             Byzantine churches were influenced by the Greek cross plan by which all four arms are equal in length. They all rise together to form a doom. Pendentives shaped as triangles were the base of the building. In the sixth century the Byzantine architecture was changing. One of the first works done was the church of san Vitale in Ravenna which displayed the octagonal dome. The dull exterior was nothing like the lustrous interior, the walls were made up polychrome marble, carved alabaster columns and some of the most magnificent mosaics in the world. .
             The Byzantine Icon:.
             Religious imagery was important to growth in Christianity; there was conflict with inside the church. Roman Catholics say that visual representations of God were to inspire people in their faith. Eastern Orthodox Churches thought that these images were no better than pagan idols themselves. During this time, iconoclasts came about (those who favored the destruction of icons) and destroyed many of the religious images.
             Early Christian Music:.
             Early Christian music was influenced by ancient Jewish rituals of daily prayer and sing of the Psalms.
