Many of our forefathers came to this country seeking religious tolerance and once they decided to create a government, they were determined to insure a balance between an individual's rights and religion within the government. Because of this, we now have the First Amendment, "freedom of religion, speech, and the press; Rights of assembly and petition."(World Book, 1984, pg 7980). There would be no single religion placed before another in this country nor shall any religion have any authority within the government. This amendment stood for so many things and our forefathers did not realize the impact this one amendment would have. This Amendment was ratified on December 15, 1791, however today we are struggling with this one simple question should displays of the Ten Commandments be allowed in public schools and government buildings (p.7980).
The posting of the Ten Commandments should not be such a issue in this country if only individuals would remember how America fought against controls of a government that stood for religious control. People wanted the freedom to choose a religion that they thought would best suit them and without the interference of a government authority. America prides itself on the fact that there is no one dominant religion. .
We seem to thrive on the diverse religious organizations here today. .
How can one view the posting of the Ten Commandments in public building be appropriate for an entire nation? How can people believe that everyone follows Christianity what about there believes and rights? Many individuals practice different religions and if the Commandments were posted where is the religious tolerance. Millions of Americans do not practice Christianity. So how can anyone believe to be practicing religious tolerance, if he or she wishes to see the Ten Commandments posted? America has become obsessed with the posting of the Ten Commandments.
