Rediscovering Discovery Learning


            In this article it talks about 10 discovery methods that you could implement into the classroom. It goes over each of the 10 methods and gives an example of how they would be used in a certain setting. .
             The article talked about how this discovery could cause a problem for the students. The quote they used in the article was "Discovery methods seemed risky, much like throwing youngsters into the deep end of a swimming pool so they would learn to swim." As the teacher in the article moved on and tried these methods he found that the methods of teaching were not so complicated or time consuming. The time the children spend on these methods is time well spent. He got very good feedback from the kids and they said that they learned the class information quicker and it stayed with them longer. Teachers use different methods to have a variety in the class, the kids don't have to sit through the same thing day after day. These methods are used in place of regular direct and frontal teaching; meaning instead of lecturing the teacher uses these methods. .
             The 10 discovery methods are: warm-ups, student questions, examples and non-examples, class discussions, set introduction, problem solving, Socratic questions, laboratory exercises, class demonstrations, and individualized study assignments.
             Warm-ups are short practice exercises to get students in the mood to participate in class. Some different warm-ups would be: "twenty questions" where the students try to figure out an answer to a question by asking the teacher yes and no questions. A public interview is another warm-up, in this a student is selected to be interviewed and the class asks the questions. Incomplete sentences lets the kids finish a sentence you start, for example: The kind of job I want when I get older is This will help the kids think and keep their minds going. It also lets the kids interact with the class with their input.
