The purpose of the different types of rebar experiments was to show how processes such as annealing, rolled, hardened, will affect the grain structure, of a sample of normalized rebar. All the rebar samples were prepared from the different processes such as annealed rebar, normalized rebar, hardened rebar, rolled rebar. The samples were then placed in a thermoplastic machine, each was sanded and polished and etched to examine the grain structure of each sample of rebar .The final experiment Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES) was done by taking steel shaving and dissolving them and diluting them in a known solution. Then the solution is then analyzed for its atomic makeup to find the types of elements that go into making steel. The results of the experiment will be shown in a report.
Procedure: .
A. Steel Grain Analysis on Mounted Samples.
1. The normalized rebar sample was cut using the Samplemet 2 Abrasion cutter about 1/2 inch from the sample given by the lab instructor. The rebar was placed securely in the vice to prevent the rebar from coming out of the vice. The sample was then cut by lowering the handle slowly to make sure that the blade would not be damaged while cutting the rebar sample. The sample was cooled during the cutting process and removed once the blade stopped.
2.The sample was then taken to the Duomet II grinder. The machine was turned on with the water to provide a lubricant for the sand paper. The sample was then sanded smooth to remove the rough edges on the 0rebar sample. The sample was rinsed and dried to remove any impurities acquired from the sanding process.
3. The sample was then placed in the Macromet I Rockwell Hardness Tester were three hardness tests was performed on the sample. The sample was moved in different spots each time to get a average overall hardness reading for the normalized rebar sample. .
4.The sample was place into the Simplemet 3 mounting press the side with the harness test.
