Carlos tells Enrico that one day they will let his father go free. "Your father will be taken to your neighborhood, where he will be released. It will happen, Enrico believe me. If not tonight then soon"(pg 29). The next day Enrico is reunited with his father and everyone who has lost someone now has hope that Carlos will tell them when they will see one another again. Carlos's imagination keeps people from giving up, and gives them the hope to keep fighting.
             After many months of answering other peoples questions Carlos decides he must set out to find Cecilia if he wants to see her again. Carlos travels to the South or the pampas in search of her. During his travels he meets the Sternbergs. The Sternbergs have survived the Holocaust and are inspiration to Carlos. They are living proof that people can survive. " The Sternbergs, were a tribute to the power of imagination which had survived events that should have killed them"(pg 117). Carlos was ready to give up but instead now he must still keep the hope alive. After Carlos meets them he realizes he must go back home and not give in. He realizes that Cecilia will come to him and that he will not find her in the South.
             Carlos's trip to the south is very important.
