Pablo Picasso

Pablo enjoyed the art class, but unfortunately the teachers there followed an old traditional style of art, creating casts of plaster and nothing to stimulate his imagination. As a result, he would keep diaries of sketchbooks at home, where he could draw anything that came to his mind. He would use this sketchbook idea for the remainder of his life.
A family trip to Madrid in 1894 inspired much of Pablo's future artwork. Here, he admired the work of many of Spain's most popular artists, including Zurbaran, Velazquez, El Greco, and Goya. Another inspiration to him was when his family had to move to Barcelona after Don Jose lost his job and their income reduced greatly. At the time, Barcelona was engaged in demonstrations, riots, and fights, between Republicans, Separatists, and Anarchists all fighting over government. The rallies were already inspiring many writers, musicians, and artists. Barcelonans at the time explained that they wanted their artwork to reveal emotions and not intellect. " Barcelona artists dared to paint portraits that did not flatter their subjects. Cruel reality was considered bad taste- (Lyttle 13). This would make it even harder for Pablo to gain support from the people around him.
In the fall of 1900, Pablo went on a trip to Paris with his friends and attended an art exhibition, where he admired the artwork of Manet, Cezanne, and Toulouse-Lautrec, and for the first time saw the work of Jean Ingres and Eugene Delacroix. Shortly after, while visiting Berthe Weill's small gallery of art, a Spanish industrialist named Pedro Manach, offered Pablo 150 francs a month (about thirty dollars) for all the artwork he could produce. Hoping to make money to support himself in Paris, he hastily accepted the offer. .
Pablo started going to circuses, cafés, and dancehalls in Paris, where he developed new ideas for his first Paris paintings. He was getting well acquainted with his new home until one day, when his friend shot himself to death, over a girlfriend.
