Catcher In The Rye

On page 67, he says, "You should see her. You never saw a little kid so pretty and smart in your whole life. She's really smart" This quote shows that he thinks very highly of Phoebe and respects the fact that she is smart. On the same page he goes on to describe Phoebe. "But you ought to see old Phoebe. She has this sort of red hair, a little bit like Allie's was, that's very short in the summertime. In the summertime, she sticks it behind her ears. She has nice, pretty little ears. In the wintertime, it's pretty long, thought. Sometimes my mother braids it and sometimes she doesn't. It's really nice, though." This quote shows that Holden pays a lot of close attention to Phoebe and the way her hair looks, not something an older brother would usually do.
             .
Another person who he speaks highly of in this book is his deceased brother, Allie. .
Holden doesn't mention Allie until the 5th chapter. In this chapter, he is writing an observation paper for Stradlater. Holden decides to write the paper about Allie's baseball mitt. On page 38, he says, " My brother Allie had this left-handed fielder's mitt. He was left-handed. The thing that was descriptive about it, though, was that he had poems written all over the fingers and the pocket and everywhere. In green ink." This passage shows that he cares about Allie so much that he is willing to write a paper about his fielder's mitt. I think that a lot of anger comes from Allie's death. Allie's death doesn't seem to be something that is a common topic around his family. Because of this, I think that he has a lot of built up anger that he ends up releasing onto other people that he meets.
             .
Although we never meet Jane in the book, Holden is constantly talking about her. On page 42, when he is fighting with Stradlater about Jane he says, "I could hardly keep my voice from shaking all over the place. Boy, was I getting nervous. I just had a feeling something had gone funny.
