Raisin In The Sun

One day, when Mama is out of the house, a representative of Clybourne Park, named Karl Lindner, visits the family and tries to kindly tell them that people of their kind are not welcomed in the new community. He offers them back their down payment, plus extra money, if they move into a different neighborhood. Walter disobeys Mama's orders and gives the whole remaining amount of money to Willy Harris to invest in the liquor store. Weeks later, Bobo come by and sadly tells Walter that Willy has taken both of their shares of the money and ran off. The family is depressed and Walter decides to have Karl Lindner back over to discuss selling back the house. When he arrives, Walter displays his pride in his family. He proudly tells the man that his father worked hard for every brick in that house and there is no way they are not going to move into that neighborhood. Walter has redeemed himself in his family's eyes. The family finishes packing and move on to their new home and new life.
Mama's plant is old, withered, and sits in the shadows of the house where it receives no sunlight. It is dying and is in much need of care. It was once alive and flourishing but the walls of the house have suffocated it, turning into nothing but a weeping memory. The plant symbolizes the family's struggles and hope for a better life. The family was once very peaceful and loving but as the times changed, they became filled with bitterness and anger towards one another. Ruth is pregnant and they are already too crowded in the tiny apartment. One would think that the family would feel relieved of their pain and hassles when they received the money, but it only added to their frustrations. The family could not agree on what to do with the money since they each had their own hopes and dreams in life. Mama thought Walter was in the "dark", like the plant, because he thought life was all about having an endless supply of money and all the pleasures in life.
