If you watch a basketball game, you may notice that black athletes tend to dominate the court. I think the reason for this situation is not only because black athletes are superior in physical features to other races of athletes, but also their social status and general tendency to want to play basketball. African American communities tend to gather in urban areas, such as downtown in the city, and there are more fields covered with concrete than covered with grass. Under these circumstances, African American people are almost forced to play basketball rather than baseball if they want to play a sport. Also, African American children are more likely to want to be a professional basketball player rather than a swimmer because they feel more possibility to become a basketball player due to heroes of basketball, such as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. This kind of theme has a tendency to draw more black athletes toward playing basketball. Thus, this tendency becomes a cycle, and increases the number of black athlete in basketball.
Like basketball, football, and baseball in America, baseball is one of the most popular sports in Japan. In America, different sports are going on in each season, such as fall is football season and winter is basketball season. However, the professional baseball players are reported the whole year in Japan, even during off-season. For example, if baseball players play golf, that event is on the television program. Interestingly, even though baseball is such a famous sport in Japan, nobody thought Japanese players could play well in the Major Leagues in America. The reasons for that myth are the physical make-up of the Japanese players, and there had been no Japanese major league players in history. Retired players said that American players were so big and tall compared with typical Japanese athletes that there would be no way to play with them. However, Nomo Hideo became the first Japanese Major League player in 1995.
