Aquinas

There is no possibility in God because His possibility is impossible. Anslem believes there are four kinds of beings: those which must exist, cannot exist, cannot be possible, and non-possible (not saying it's impossible). An impossible being is that which cannot exist. God must satisfy these attributes: omnipotence, omniscience, omnibenevolent, and absolute. Anselm started with what he knew and began to test those theories. He began with: God and the world is not greater than God alone because God doesn't need the world or its creatures to make Him pious, or greater. God is so perfect, thus God does not need the world's support. God did not become greater by making us because that would mean that God was subject to potentiality and God cannot change. God is lacking nothing. God is not a principal of motion because God does not occur in time. Furthermore, Anselm takes the example of a fool. He states that a fool is a fool because he will state that there is no God. By stating that there is no God, he negates what he truly understands which is God. By stating that there is no God, one is contradicting everything they know because God exists in your mind. Anselm, then concludes, that God is an idea rather than a reality, and failed to find a complete distinction between the idea of God and the reality of God. In short, God must be. God is not merely an intra-mental concept but an extra-mental reality as well. But why? The reason he gives is because if God is truly that than greater which cannot be conceived, it follows that God must exist both in the mind and in reality. If God did not exist in reality as well as our understanding, then we could conceive of a greater being i.e. a being that does exist outside the mind and within the mind. But, by definition, there can be no greater being. Thus, there must be a corresponding extra-mental reality to our intra-mental conception of God.
