Christopher Wynne Nevinson art piece

Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson grew up in London; at nineteen he studied painting at St. His later years were spent at Slade school of art (1909-12). His paintings were recognised as his own personal feelings. He confirmed himself that he saw the Great War as a tragic event. In most of his paintings he prophesises great or dramatic events i.e. World War One.
"Bursting Shell" is one of his best apocalyptic paintings. It was painted with oil on canvas paper. It seems very expressionistic; the distortions of its lines and colour show emotion that he himself may be feeling. The painting looks like an explosion in a street the street appears to be drawn into the swirling vortex in the middle. The painting has a very strong vocal point, which is in the middle of the vortex. It seems very surreal but is still very realistic about the ideas of war. The dark shapes could be shades of debris, shadows or just there to add to the vocal point which makes you look towards it. The whole painting in my view is the concept of the feelings and sensory experience in an explosion. The vortex displays the explosion core itself while the outer part shows the disorientation a person would sense and see. The swirling colours show a rhythm of patterns and colours.
I am really impressed by this painting it caught my eye and I love the effect it gives about war and conflict. The most important thing in this work of art is depth without it the piece would look flat. With it the painting looks three-dimensional and makes the concept of an explosion more realistic. The sense of depth is the smaller shapes and objects in the foreground these are faded to give the impression of further away. The painting is also chairusso as the outer part is dark and on the inside there is the strong vocal point of light colours. This makes the painting three dimensional. By varying the tones of light and dark.
