Family Planning

" (Xizhe, 17) .
Mao Zedong's views were certainly embraced as he encouraged the population to have many children to make the country strong. He strongly believed that the communist economic reformation would increase production to the point where the country could sustain itself at any level. The logic was that more people could produce more goods; he saw no maximum limitations to the new economy. It is approximated that the total population of China grew almost 200 percent in size under Zedong. His views would not remain unchanged, however. The 1953 census made Mao rethink his take on population growth and sparked a gradual change in his opinion and policy as well (Xizhe). Mao's rethought outlook in 1956; .
"It is necessary to publicize and promote birth control and planned parenthood in all densely populated areas." (Xizhe, 17).
This reformed thinking on Mao's part was not implemented into policy largely at first, although the Chinese government eventually sought to create something much stricter that would enable them to hopefully curb their nation's problem. Beginning in 1973, the government basically came out and said to its constituency that it would be best if each family was to only have one child. This meant one birth per household for a country whose tradition is couched in large families and their lives lead through familial ties since the birth of the Chinese culture. Originally, this was loosely campaigned for and the notion of birth control was quietly put into the back of the minds of the people of China mostly because of Mao's inconsistency and alternating opinion on the population issue; as to whether it should be controlled or if the size should actually be embraced. However, with the death of Mao Zedong in 1976 came a transformation in the politics of China as far as population control was concerned. .
In 1979, the one child policy was officially introduced to the country.
