Pre Cival War Economic Development

Slavery made it possible for American economic development prior to the war betwixt the states. War is a very powerful economic tool because it stimulates growth, creates jobs, and provides economic capital. America had achieved much of its" economic growth through war. Between 1800 and 1850 the nation's per capita income had doubled, and the nation found itself richer than ever before. There are different reasons for this increase in the nation's value, mainly slavery and industrialization. .
In the nineteenth century, the American economy increased for both the North and the South. The North was using a commercial system, and trying to industrialize the economy. The South was most known for two things, growing cotton and employing slavery. .
Slavery has been an integral part of America's rise in power since the beginning of colonization. Slaves were very cheap labor, could be controlled through force, and could be put to work doing most anything. Most of the slaves were mainly agricultural workers, and it was through slavery that plantations became so abundant and profitable. As they became more profitable, they became larger and more specialized in terms of labor. The invention of the cotton gin made cotton and slave labor much more profitable because cotton could be de-seeded fifty times faster than before. After this invention, more farmers migrated to the southern area known as the "black belt," which consisted of western Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. This was the area in the South with the location of the most fertile soil and best growing conditions for cotton. This, in turn, caused production to increase, and the need for slaves increased accordingly. Through the invention of the cotton gin and the use of slaves, the South's economy shot through the roof. .
The racial cause for slavery was due to the fact that whites believed that the best work force could be acquired through "creation of a racially distinct, enslaved group of workers, captured and transported from Africa against their will" (Out of Many).
