Animal Shelter Stats

And the last possible solution for an animal in a shelter is that they may be euthanised. The American Humane Society approximates that in 1995 11 million dogs and 19 million cats are euthanized within shelters, not to mention another 2 million dogs and 4 million cats that are put down by vets.
             8. Social Lubricating theory of human animal attachment shows that pets overall can change our relationships with others in particularly good ways. Also, pets can increase the quantity and quality of life. There are 8 aspects to this theory: the first aspect being that pets attract attention to us. Whenever someone is walking a pet down the street or playing in the park with a pet most people find the need to go pet the animal or try and play with it. The next aspect is that the pet has an appeal to us and others. How we show off our animals, their cleanliness, the toys they have, to how much we spend on them, for instance horses, people spend a lot of money each month on all kinds of things for horses, from vets to care to housing them, it's a way for people to say "look at me I got some money and I can spend it." Following this aspect is the third which is pets as conversation. This is displayed along side them bringing attention to us in that when one might come to pet your pet they will probably start talking to you about the particular animal. For instance if you happen to have a cute little puppy and bring it for a walk on the quad on a nice sunny day the chance that the puppy will bring the attention of girls with it and therefore a conversation with them is pretty good. The next aspect is pets as icebreakers, meaning that if your in a household and you and your spouse are fighting and not talking, you might break the ice by asking if he/she has fed the dog or cat. This too goes along with the conversation aspect they bring the attention to you, and then the ice is broken therefore making conversation.
