Political Science In The Arab-Israeli Conflict

(Fraser, 1995) As the Arabs are poorly trained the Jewish side won the war and took a most of Palestine. In leaving their homes these became occupied by Jewish settlers. The Arab point of view is that they were forced from their homes while the Jewish view is that they left willingly. Regardless, this left approximately 450,000 to 600,000 Arabs without homes. (Gerner,1994) They formed temporary refugee camps both within former Palestine and inside the borders of Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt. Those remaining in Israel became second class citizens. Consequently there grew a rise in Arab nationalism and in Egypt there was a military coup in which Colonel Nasser Hussein took control. From Egypt there were constant attacks made on Israel by the Arab Fedayeen military group who were preparing for war. When Nasser bought arms from Czechoslovakia, Britain and France stopped funding his rebuilding of the Suez Canal, an important sea link to Europe. Nasser therefore nationalized the British owned canal. This in turn brought England, France and Israel into alliance against Egypt and the allies funded an Israeli offensive in 1956. With early success the Israelis pushed Egypt passed the Suez Canal yet the Egyptians blocked the canal with sunken ships. After an international call for ceasefire military action stopped with world condemnation of England, France and Israel. Consequently the war was a military defeat for Egypt in loosing the Sinai Peninsular yet a diplomatic victory with Nasser praised amongst Arabs for standing up to the West. Israel, under American pressure was forced to give back the Sinai in 1957 and the Suez Canal would remain closed for some time. The Palestinian Liberation Organisation came into existence in 1964 was now formerly ordering Fedayeen raids from Jordan and Syria. This organization was a collective of moderate to extreme Palestinian groups. Raids were prevented from Egypt due to the presence of United Nations forces following the 1957 war.
