Many people in America are gaining weight and the problems that come along with it. Stroke, heart disease, and diabetes are some bad effects of being overweight. Also, at the same time many people, especially young females, are losing weight maybe to avoid health problems associated with gaining weight. Yet sometimes people may not understand that too much weight loss has just as bad effects as being overweigh does. The causes for dieting can be for more than just health reasons. The media plays an important role in weight loss as well.
Young females especially diet so that they might look like the super-thin models on television. This is because the media has portrayed thin women as being the idea of beauty, and what young woman does not want to be beautiful? The truth is, however, that only 1 percent of women can actually be that kind of super-thin (Kilborne). The rest of us just wish we were that thin or diet obsessively to be or stay thin. The effects of the obsession with thinness are physically visible whereas the causes may not be so clear.
