Othello, by William Shakespeare, is a story of a heartbreaking and tragic hero, Othello. The play is centered on love, hate, deception, and turmoil. In my analysis of Othello I found the play demonstrates the battle of good vs. evil, irony, and tragedy. .
Othello begins in the city of Venice during a dispute between the rich Roderigo and the deceitful Iago. Iago has been getting paid to assist Roderigo in courting Desdemona, the daughter of a Venetian Senator, only Des has secretly married Othello, a general whom Iago serves under. Iago despises Othello for passing him up on his most recent promotion for the position of Lieutenant in favor of Cassio, an inexperienced soldier.
As the story carries on, Iago discovers the secret marriage of Othello and Des. Iago decides to tell Des's father that she has been kidnapped and married to Othello due to his witchcraft, and then quickly rushes to Othello to tell him of the Senators arrival. Cassio then arrives at Othello's home to inform him that the Duke needs him in the matter of the Turkish invasion of Cyrus. Not long after Cassio arrival Des's father shows up at Othello's house and accuses him of using witchcraft in order to marry his daughter. Brabanzio accompanies Othello to see the Duke to confront him in front of the Senate. Due to the fact that the Duke and the Senate favor Othello, Othello gets the chance to speak his peace. He explains that he loves Des and that there was no witchcraft involved. The Duke then tells Othello of his journey ahead to aid in the defense for the Turks, and the couple will leave tonight.
As the ships arrive the Governor is told that the Turk ships have been destroyed in a storm at sea. As the ships wait for Othello to come to the harbor Cassio greets Des by grabbing her hand and Iago sees this as a plan in the making. Othello comes ashore and says there is to be a party tonight in honor of the Turks safety. As Roderigo gets even more upset he realizes that there is no chance in breaking up the marriage, but Iago assures him that "blood is made dull with the act of sport," she will lose interest in Othello and seek sexual satisfaction elsewhere.
