Chanukah

Some Jews cooperated fearing violence but some also resisted being faithful to their religion. The Jewish people that went along with the Syrian way of life were known as hellenists. A hellenist is a Jewish person who accepted idol-worship and the Syrian way of life. They did this to avoid persecution. The Jewish people who "traded" there religion were shunned by the Jews. Later on Seleucus was killed and his brother Antiochus IV started his rein. He believed that all of his people should live the Syrian way or die. He was known as the madman because of his curliness to his people. Antiochus IV wanted the Jews to practice the Greek and Syrian religion ("American Jewish History").
The Jews were the only group in Syria that did not practice the Syrian way of life and religion. Antiochus IV wanted them to be converted to the Greek religion so he banned all of the Jewish Laws and practices so that the Jews would be forced to convert, and unify Syria in religion. Antiochus IV at first wanted to avoid violence, so he replaced the righteous High Priest, Yochanan, from the Temple in Jerusalem with the hellenist party leader, who was Yochanan's brother, Joshua, who loved to call himself by the Greek name of Jason. Jason was seen as a trader of the Jewish religion. Jason promised the king that he would spread more and more Greek customs within the priesthood. This was the first step in converting the Jews to the dominant religion. This really angered the Jews and many of them wanted this to be stopped. Jason was later replaced by another man, Menelaus, who had promised the king that he would bring in more money than Jason did. After this occurred the former high priest Yochanan protested the spread of the hellenist party. When the high priest learned of this, he hired assassins to murder Yochanan (Johnson 187).
At this time Antiochus IV was leading a successful war against Egypt.
