A little over two thousand years ago in the area we know as Israel there was a great struggle between the oppressive Syrian Empire and the Jews. The Jewish people have lived there for centuries but King Antiochus III took the land from King Ptolemy. Antiochus III the king of Syria wagered war with King Ptolemy of Egypt for the land we know as Israel, and Antiochus III had won it after the war. Before it was taken, the land was peaceful and serene. Antiochus III did not mind the Jews and did not cause them much trouble. He let them continue their way of life. Antiochus III was trying to endow a Syrian way of life on his new empire. The Jewish people believed in their religion and chose to stay faithful to it. Antiochus III wanted the Jews to live a Syrian way life but they refused and Antiochus did not make a big deal about it. Later on Antiochus III was beaten by the Romans in war and had to pay heavy taxes to the Romans. The heavy taxes were passed down to his people who had to furnish the gold to pay the Romans. This troubled the Jewish people. They had to come up with a whole lot of money to pay for a tax that they did not cause.
