I have been attending the University of Southern Maine for two years now. Within this time, I have stayed in the dorms, and have become in contact with many problems at the Gorham campus. One especially seems to be the food service called Aramark.
One problem I seem to have with Aramark is the snack bar hours. They are very inconsistent on the weekends. On Saturday and Sunday, the snack bar does not open until 4:00pm. There is also only brunch on the weekends which runs from 11:00- 1:00. So if you miss that, then you cannot eat until 4:00 when the snack bar opens. It is especially an inconvenience when you do not have a vehicle on campus to go anywhere else to eat, or if you do not have food in your dorm room. This made me realize how much of a monopoly Aramark has on campus. Since they do in fact have a monopoly, one might think that they would be very flexible with their prices and policies. Instead, they take advantage of each and every student for the simple reason of making a profit for their company.
My second problem with Aramark is the prices on the food at the snack bar. Everything seems to be outrageously overpriced for a student who wants food. Seeming that they may be hungry, they will pay for it no matter what the cost. Aramark must realize that these days a student pays a great deal of money simply to attend this school,.
and Aramark should be doing their part to keep the extra expenses to a minimal. For instance, if I were to go to the snack bar and order a small turkey sub, I would receive that and any other vegetables that I want, but if I want cheese with that, I have to pay 50 cents extra for a slice. I feel that is just ridiculous that you have to pay extra for cheese. Is cheese that expensive of a food item that you have to pay extra for it instead of anything else? So if my sandwich originally costs 4.50 and I got cheese on it, that is an extra 50 cents, so I would have to end up paying 5.
