The secret diary of Adrian Mole begins on January 1st 1981 when he is 13 and 3/4. From the very outset of the novel, we learn that Adrian is very naive and oblivious to what is going on around him and that he considers himself an intellectual and above the common crowd. Soon after he begins his diary, we (the reader, most certainly not Adrian) begin to notice the relationship between his parents start to deteriorate and his mother begins an affair with the next door neighbour Mr. Lucas. Adrian also has an on-again-off-again relationship with the love of his life, Pandora which is a plays a major part in his life throughout the course of his diary. .
A great deal happens to him over the following two years.
Adrian is very naive and oblivious to what is going on around him. There is evidence of this all the way through the book. We first see this on the SECOND! entry where just because his parents got drunk on New Years Eve, he believes that "His parents are alcoholics and he could end up living in a home next year". It is not possible to pick out particular events that show how naive he really is as there are hundreds throughout the book, every couple of entries there is an example. The most significant one is how he did not realize that his parent's relationship was detiorating and his mother was having an affair, especially seeing as though they (Mrs. Mole and Mr. Lucas) did not bother covering it up in front of Adrian.
Adrian did not notice his mother was having an affair until after his parents were divorced, he just thought Mr. Lucas was being "friendly" by spending a lot of his time with Mrs. Mole while she was sick. Because of the divorce, Adrian believed that his intellectuality is threatened and he shudders at the fact that for his Sunday dinner he was forced to have boil in the bag cod and oven fried chips with tinned peaches and dream-topping.
