ARC DE TRIOMPHE

The Arc De Triomphe was built by Napoleon in 1806, and was not finished until 1836. There are four huge projected sculptures at the bases of the four pillars. These honor The Triumph of 1810; Peace, and Resistance. It also honors the departure of the volunteers. Written at the top of the arch are the names of many victories that Napoleon won. As you can see, Napoleon was a very "humble" person with all of the statues of him surrounded on his arc to signify that he was the most powerful at the time. The names of less important victories, as well as 558 generals are found on the inside walls. The names that are underlined show that the general died in action. Beneath the Arch is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and eternal flame remembering the deceased from the two world wars. Inside of the arch there is a small museum documenting its history and construction. There is a curved staircase inside of it to go to the top. There is a small price to pay if you are looking to venture up the stairs. From the roof of the arch you can see spectacular views of Paris. This is what makes the arch so amazing in my opinion because you can see everything. The arch just so happens to sit in the center of Paris, with five streets branching out of it like a star. The main street is the Champs-Elysees. I have been to Paris once before and I remember looking out my hotel window and seeing the Arc De Triomphe. Unlike, my parents I haven't ventured to the top because they have been there once before I have, and they had already done it. I just remember it being incredibly beautiful, and very interesting. At the time my dad was obsessed with learning about Napoleon, so it made it a lot more fun to be around. The reason I chose this is because not a lot of people choose to do this landmark because it isn't that old, and it's not very symbolic. It is very symbolic for the people of France though, because it acknowledges the powerful country France once was because of their 19th century small, but fearful leader.
