Charlemagne

After ruling for three years Carloman grew very sick and died. After his brothers death Charlemagne was unanimously elected king of the Franks. .
During his reign Charlemagne was as good a peace time ruler as he was a warrior. He had many foreign relations some good and some bad. Charlemagne had many alliances with many countries. He had alliances with the king of Persia, with emperors of Constantinople and he even had an alliance with the voitile picks and Scots. He was on such good terms with king of Persia that the king sent his only elephant to Charlemagne on hearing that he wanted one. Even though he had an alliance with Constantinople they were not the best of friends because the power of the Franks was always looked upon with jealousy from the Greeks and the Romans. (Sayers, D).
Charlemagne improved his kingdom not only with alliances but also with public work many very important. He got the ideas from the Romans and there great public works. Charlemagne's greatest public work was the basilica of the Holy Mother of God built with the greatest of work man ship. Another very impressive work was a bridge across the Rhine river at a point where the river is half a mile wide. The bridge was destroyed by fire one year before the death of Charlemagne. He intended to have it rebuilt in stone but he died before the construction could begin. He also built two grand places one near his manor and the other near the capitol. .
Charlemagne made many Reforms of the laws of his people. He cited the wrongs and made new laws the corrected some the discrepancies. The law before he reformed them two separate sets of laws for two separate sets of people. He really did not this type of work very much for he was illiterate. .
Charlemagne made many conquests expanding the kingdom which would become the Empire. Strange enough the Frankish style warfare was very crude.
