Our Ozone

Electric cars don't provide the type of power that Americans demand. With the increasing popularity of SUV's and sports cars, there doesn't seem to be any hope for the near future. Hydrogen based fuel could keep the next generation of cars equally as powerful, but they are still many years away and will probably face stiff opposition from oil companies. .
There are two types of ozone, one being destructive, which is closer to the ground and the protective ozone which is up in the earths atmosphere. The ozone is what protects us from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. There are two types of ultraviolet rays; an A and B. UV A rays are harmful to humans in that they can cause Melanoma, Cataracts and other types of skin cancers. UV B can be healthy in small amounts, but in large doses can also be harmful. People at higher elevations are at more a more substantial risk due to the thinner air and being closer to sun. Damage to the ozone layer is expected to cause higher rates of skin cancer, cataracts, crop damage, the marine food cycle, and an increase in carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming. To protect yourself limit your time in mid day sun, use sunscreen where a hat and sunglasses and avoid tanning beds and sun lamps.
What is the ozone hole? The ozone hole was created by man, and currently sits over the Antarctica. The ozone hole was found in 1985 by a NASA satellite that was probing the earth. The hole occurs over the Antarctic because of the polar winters. The polar winters lead to the formation of the polar vortex. Which is cold enough to create polar stratospheric clouds, in these clouds a reaction between the chemicals takes place and converts the inactive chlorine and bromine to more active forms. Ozone loss will not occur until sunlight returns in October and gets into the air inside the Polar Vortex and activates and releases the chemicals. That begins the rapid destruction of ozone.
