Aristotle

The first book that I decided to read is The Economics of Technological Change the author of this book is Edwin Mansfield. I thought this book would be interesting to read because it would be exciting to see the importance of technology in the economy, the way that it was measured and how it was used, as far as goods and services. Prior to reading the text I thought there would be much discussion of computers and they way that this technology has changed our way of life completely, whether it be in defense education or health. I imagined there would be discussion of the advancements in transportation technology. I began reading the book, as it discussed the atomic bomb and medical research from the fifties I realized that I had better check the copyright to see when it was written and unfortunately the book had become slightly outdated, with a copyright of 1968. I am a little disappointed that it was an older book but I decided that I would continue on with the reading and found that there was much information that was relevant with examining the current economy, in looking at the way technology affects us.
The book began with describing what technological change is "the advance of knowledge relative to the industrial arts." (Mansfield, pg8) The idea that technological change was the advance of knowledge was a theme that was continued throughout the book. The book began with an introductory chapter that paraphrased the topics of the following chapters in the book. This made the text interesting to read in the sense that the reader knew what was going to be coming up in the book, and was given a small idea of what each chapter was about.
The first chapter began with a discussion of technological change and the effect that it has on productivity growth. The author felt that it was important to establish the difference between technological change and a change in technique.
