Since Huck doesn't have a family he is taken in by the widow Douglas and her sister Miss Watson. The women do all they can to bring Huck up to be a decent boy with manners, etiquette; they also send him to school and to church. Huck isn't a fan of this proper upbringing, but he is compliant to Miss Watson and her ways. Huck's father hears about the money and wealth his son has, so he goes to court to get custody of Huck just for his money. He gains custody of the boy but luckily Huck gave away his money so his father can't steal it. .
Huck is forced to live with his father in a shack in the woods. There his father gets drunk and beats Huck. Everyday and night it's the same thing, until Huck decides to runaway and get away from his father for good. One night when his father went to town to get drunk Huck devised a plan to where he would runaway, but make it look like he was murdered. The plan works great. Huck manages to float down on a raft away from his father and his hometown, but many people put on a hunt for his body and the murderer. .
While Huck is hiding in the woods during the day, he finds a camp out and thinks it's a bunch of robbers. Reluctant to find out its Jim! Jim was Miss Watson house-slave nigger and was a friend of Huck's while they lived with Miss Watson. Jim told Huck his story of why he ran away and they decide to travel together, since they were both being hunted after. This started their friendship and adventure together down the Mississippi River. Huck and Jim are enjoying living in the outdoors and doing their own thing, traveling and adventuring down the river together.
