The Romance of Magno Rubio (ma-yi theater company)


Magno's spirits return. Although, his poet friend, whom after reading Clarabel's letters tried to dissuade Magno from proposing to Clarabel. He tells him to at least reveal his being Filipino to her. Clarabel, clearly in a false impression of Magno's financial status, accepts Magno's wedding proposal. The night before Clarabel's coming, Claro steals away into the night to go to Alaska where he believes there is a better life for him in the fish canning industry. He tries to steal Magno's wedding savings but is foiled by Magno's poet friend who in turn gives his own tuition money to Claro.
             Climax.
             Clarabel finally meets Magno and though they were only communicated through Magno's wise friend Nick for they didn't speak each other's language, they agreed to be married the next day. It becomes clear that Clarabel is a real bitch. Magno could not sleep until the next day when he was seen off by his commiserating firends who knew of the nave blindedness of Mago's love which shined like a beacon of hope which all of them has long lost. Magno arived in the hotel where Clarabel stayed and saw Clarabel deriving away laughing and with her husband. He then understands everything.
             Resolution.
             The worker's chant their extolling and lamenting rhetoric on Magno Rubio, Filipino boy. The play ends showing Magno smiling naive and yet filled with undying hope.
             Characters.
             The actors performance was magnificent, this is the to be expected of course in such a play that garnered the coveted award of non-Broadway plays. It was revealed in the open discussion with the director and with the actors at the end of the play that they were all involved in the conceptualization of the play in the course if its workshopping. It is evident therefore of how their deep, intelligent, and real their acting was. Their movements also utilized arnis moves as a percussion instrument and as a harvesting action.

             The dialogue used a mixture of Tagalog and English.
