Industrialization In Indian Society

Although, the family receives a much greater income while their children are employed by the tannery, the prices throughout their local economy skyrocket, making it nearly impossible for them to purchase their basic needs. On top of the financial strain it places the community in, it also causes a major disruption in the regular lifestyle of the Indian people. "It was a fine peaceful morning, not a sound from the factory, which for one blessed day in the week closed down completely." When Rukmani staes, "a fine peaceful morning, not a sound from the factory" she is demonstrating to the reader how her life is so altered by the sounds of the factory, that she is finally able to rest and get some work done when it shuts down. However, possibly the most detrimental effect of the tannery on the village, is the ripple effect it has on the people, once the traditional economy begins to fade away as a result of the tannery. This horrible effect is highlighted when one of Rukmani's son, in an attempt to obtain some food for his family, tries to sneak into the factory to steal a hide to sell for food. Yet, as he is leaving the factory the guards catch up with him and beat him to death for stealing the food. This atrocious act could have easily been avoided if industrialization had never occurred, or occurred in a more staggered process. Soon afterwards, all other job opportunities are lost in the community due to the tannery and Rukmani's two other sons must leave the country in search of work. .
On the other hand, The Real Durwan symbolically represents industrialization in India, and concentrates more of its effects on the people rather than the economic results. We are shown the process of industrialization through Boori Ma an old, homeless women who serves as a durwan or gatekeeper, who encounters industrialization and loses her life and job to it. The industrialization in this building is symbolically represented by basins that are installed in the building.
