These include: one-way communication, certainty, and conversational control. .
I will start with "you" language, which literally means, "a statement that expresses or implies a judgment of the other person" (Adler 480). This is shown in the line of the song that says, "So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been, it's all been a pack of lies". This is an important part of getting his point across in the song. At this point, he is telling Andrea that she does not need to pretend anymore because he knows everything. In the other interpretation of the song, this would be the point that he makes clear to the counselor that he knows the truth of the drowning. "You" language affect my interpersonal communication because this may be, and in my case has been the start of many fights. When someone uses this type of language, it brings nothing positive to the relationship. No one wants to be judged. In Phil Collin's case, I don't think that he really cares whether Andrea (or the camp counselor) feels judged. In his mind she (or he) has done such a horrible thing that he is no longer concerned with feelings.
Another term that is demonstrated in the song is a factual statement. A factual statement is "a statement based on direct observation of sense data" (Adler 475). This is shown in the line, "Well I was there and I saw what you did, I saw it with my own two eyes". In this case he knows exactly what happened because he was right there and he saw firsthand what happened, whether we are talking about cheating or drowning. This is key in the song because now he has fact in his case. This is no longer a speculation, he knows he is right because he experienced it. Factual statements affect my interpersonal communication because in everyday life, a factual statement is obviously more reliable than a guess or speculation. If a person can definitely say that something is a factual statement, then it will be more broadly accepted and understood.
