Knowledge Is The Key To Success

The ones that created a new society actually ended becoming stronger than those of their homelands did, because they learned to hunt, built shelter and make clothes. The ones that returned to their homeland did not learn any new skills, so they had to continue with their old lives.
One of the ways that Said described something similar was with his explanations of how exiled individuals worked their way into different cultures. He said that if a person took the time to learn how a different society worked and functioned, the person could then slowly adapt to that new society. Then he said that if a person did not take the time to learn about the culture they were in, that they would end up being between the two different cultures, never being a part of either one of them, but alone in their own little word.
In a way, both Toynbee and Said have described the basic need for knowledge, no matter what environment or culture a person is forced in to. This concept can be used in examples on many different levels. No matter what level a person looks at the concept, the outcome is always the same. Knowledge and flexibility are the keys to survival.
Toynbee acknowledged this fact by picking out laborers in his essay. In the second paragraph, he explained how most successful societies must separate blue-collar workers from white-collar workers in able to survive. The example he used was with the kings and magicians. Inside kingdoms, they are must higher on the ladder than the smiths and the poets. Ancient writing portrays smiths as being somewhat lame, and poets as being blind; such as to their surrounding more than literally. The reasons why these groups are separated, is to prove the point that they all have a common place within the society, and they all contribute to the society in their own way, but they have to be separated. The smiths of the society, on one hand, produce weapons and armor for the noblemen, and the poets create poetry for the royalty members.
