An example of this emotional link is shown in Tracey's letter to Mandy on Boxing Day. She wakes at 3 AM having just had a dream involving "knives and bullets and blood and shapes in the dark". Mandy's brother Steve kills her and the rest of her family while she is having this dream. Tracey mentions having the same sort of dreams throughout the rest of the book. It is interesting to watch their friendship develop and flourish as they get to know each other more and feel more comfortable with each other. Towards the end of the book their friendship is a very deep one, they consider themselves to be best friends even though they have never met. Their letters are a form of therapy for Tracey because Mandy helps her find a new perspective on life. She always wanted to be "King Dick" of A Block however, because of their correspondence and Mandy's encouraging words she decided that she would rather be a nicer person and have people be nice to her. She would rather spend her time in a more lenient section of the detention centre. Friendship is the most important theme in the book and Tracey and Mandy's friendship gives people a lot to think about long after the final turn of the page. .
Domestic violence is a major problem in many people's lives including Mandy and Tracey's and it is another major theme of the book. It is very scary to realise that there are people like Steve and Tracey's father in the real world. Domestic violence is definitely one of the most prominent topics of the book when one considers that John Marsden based the book on a newspaper account of a girl who at 16 found out that her father had murdered her mother; a television interview with a girlfriend of a murderer; a conversation with a girl who had a violent brother; and his own experiences in a Tasmanian prison when he was arrested during a conservation demonstration. There are many parts of the book where Mandy confides in Tracey and informs her of her worries about Steve.
