Looking for Alibrandi

Looking for Alibrandi, the first book by "Melina Marchetta" is an in depth look at the issues and problems faced by teenagers today. There are many interesting characters in the book but none more so than Josephine Alibrandi and John Barton. The character of Josie has to deal with issues arising from racism to family life. On the other hand the rich kid from the East John Barton has immense pressure put on him by his family and school is exceptional and John is just a time bomb ready to explode. There are many themes to be addressed in the book and what speaks out the most are racism, multiculturalism, teenage suicide and family values. This book brings out how they deal with these problems and the chain of events that happens after. My response to the book was at first, I thought it to be very dull and boring but as I continued to read I discovered a new side to myself. .
The character of Josephine makes the reader respond in a sad and sympathetic way towards the theme of Multiculturalism. Josephine is constantly being teased and mocked about her Italian background and the racist and bigotry views expressed by the Anglo-Saxons at her school hurt her deeply. "You new Australian's wear black a lot". pg 165 . . . "How dare you, you Wog!".
These comments aimed at Josephine make the reader feel dismayed and shocked by what Josie has to go through. She finds it hard to be accepted for who she is and feels her Italian background is a huge burden on her shoulders. She struggles to fit in with the crowd at St Mathurs, who surprisingly are predominantly white. .
She can't believe why people single her out because of her nationality and skin colour she's just as good as them, maybe better. My response to Multiculturism is, as long as everyone starts to tho can groups and start to make an effort to explore new cultures Australia will be known as the racist Australia. If everyone gets along and put aside their different cultural backgrounds we all can live happy lives and learn about life as well.
